Ashmore Reef is situated within Territory of the Ashmore and Cartier Islands on the edge of the Continental shelf of North- west Australia. It is made of West, Middle and East Islands, Ashmore Reef that covers a total area of 150 square km (58 square miles), Cartier Island reef that covers a total area of 9 square km (3 square mi)and two beautiful lagoons.

Ashmore Reef National Nature Reserve as established to protect this unique coral reef biosphere. It covers an area of 583 km2 (225 sq mi). The government allows only limited fishing within this protected marine reserve to the native tribes that live on the islands and practice their traditional way of life. Ashmore Reef National Nature Reserve is knows as Palau Pasir among the Indonesians and Nusa Solokaek among the natives of the Rote Island. Both names can be roughly translated as The Sand Island. Ashmore Reef National Nature Reserve is located on the Indian Ocean side of Australia on the edge of the continental shelf.
