Description of Mount Aspiring National Park

Mount Aspiring National Park was established in 1964 and is situated on the southern end of the Southern Alps. It covers 3555 sq. km (2210 sq. mi) and encompasses high mountains, beautiful river valleys, lakes and of course the mount Aspiring itself that stands at 9843 feet (over 3000 m). The best time to visit Mount Aspiring National Park would be summer. The park is accessed from Wanaka (30 mi from park, Haast, Queenstown and Glenorchy. One of the more popular trails is Routeburn Track that follows part of the old Maori trail. Indigenous tribes gathered greenstone here, which a form of a dark jade. The park has large diversity, but one bird you should look out for is kea. This smart green parrot is somewhat mischievous. Stealing food from bags and cars of tourists became their specialty. Otherwise the bird is harmless.
