The Russian Federation is a democratic federative legal state with a republican form of government. At least in theory. In reality it is a peculiar form of family and criminal ties that are in constant struggle with attempts to reform it. The main party in Russia is Edinaya Rossiya (Single Russia). While president Putin helped to created it, he largely distanted himself from this party over the course of years and positioned himself as a independent. But lets face it, who are we kidding here. It is his party.

It is not true that Russia has no opposition. It does. However to actions of mass media that has strong government influence combined with incredible corruption (both moral and monetary) among the so called opposition its influence is largely non existent.

There are two forms of oppositions in current Russian politics. One is so-called "constructive opposition" that includes the Commies, liberal-democrats (LDPR) and several others. They have seats in the Russian Parliament (Duma) and they participate in legistrature. Very often this opposition is critized for being too pro-government. In fact they are so constructive that you can't often make a distinction between Edinaya Rossiya and all other oppositional parties. They vote basically the same on main isssues.

The so-called "not so constructive opposition" are so called "liberals". They are favor president Eltsin, the 90's and everything that comes with that including openness to the West. Since the 90's are considered horrible years in the Russian history that negative view is largely transformed on the liberals who headed the government and proposed many disastrous laws and reforms with various success.

First of all don't get fooled with the term "liberal". A Russian liberal unlike Western liberal strongly favors capitalist model. Conservative in Russia on the other hand favors socialism. As it often happens things in Russia are the opposite from the rest of the World (aka the West).

Liberals are highly despised in the current Russian society and have minimal support among wide population. On one hand it is a government mass media work, on the other hand liberals are associate with economic reforms of the early 90's that almost destroyed Russian economy and caused incredible hardship among population. Nevertheless it is a small, but solid, dedicated group with really low representation in all branches of the government on all levels.

Russian mass media has a strong influence from the executive branch of Russia. While government controls minority of TV, Newspapers, Radio channels, these are most popular and most watched channels of acquiring information.

Television

Russian television has numerous channels, however small fraction of the government led channels are most popular. Oppositional opinions are heard on these channels, but talking heads on these channels are carefully selected not to be increasingly sympathetic to the audience. Hence personal dislike of a particular participant usually negates the point of view he or she is trying to deliver. This gives a right on one hand to claim that government television that all points are heard, but at the same time negate oppositional opinion or another point of view.

Nevertheless television and especially government owned television is an interesting place where official Kremlin can test its future moves and track public response to particular ideas.

Newspapers

Newspapers are losing much of its business, however internet publications have improved ratings of people who read newspapers in a digital form.

Internet and Bloggers

Internet increasingly becomes the main source of information among people. It is particularly true among younger part of the population. Bloggers and internet publications become increasingly the main source of information. Here we will discuss various popular publications and bloggers. Interestingly enough not all bloggers are Russian. Former territory of the Soviet Union created a number of Russian speaking (but non-Russian) information sources that are very popular in Russia.

Radio

Radion is fairly popular mode of communication. There are several opposition radio channels, but they have limited audience.
