Rostock, Germany

The Hanseatic city of Rostock, located on the Baltic Sea, is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a good 200,000 inhabitants. It is one of the most important German ferry ports with scheduled connections to Scandinavia, Russia and the Baltic States.

Many tourists will come to Rostock mainly because of the beautiful, white sandy beach near Warnemünde. But the Warnemünde Week and the Hansesail also attract around 1 million visitors to Rostock every year. The lower reaches of the Warnow meander through the city like a wide ribbon, creating a natural harbor that gives Rostock its maritime flair.

The visitor encounters traces of the old Hanseatic period everywhere. The imposing brick Gothic churches and the proud merchants' houses characterize Rostock's soul with their history, although the city was never the capital of Mecklenburg but always its most powerful and progressive municipality. At the time of the Hanseatic League, Rostock grew particularly quickly. A grid-shaped road network was created, large markets near the port, wide main streets and mighty ramparts, bridges, walls and gates. Up to 370 ships once sailed under the Rostock flag. The port of Rostock, which is important for ferry traffic and goods handling, and the largest German cruise port in Warnemünde are located in the city area. Rostock is surrounded by the district of Rostock, which forms the regiopole region of Rostock. The Arado and Heinkel aircraft works, established in the 1920s, made Rostock a target of air warfare in World War II. After the war, not only large companies (Heinkel, Arado, Bootswerft Kröger) were subject to dismantling by the occupying power, but also numerous medium-sized companies. In 1949, the reconstruction of the almost completely destroyed urban area between Marienkirche and Grubenstraße began, with the historic streets only being partially reconstructed. After 1990, the Rostock economy has changed significantly. The importance of the shipbuilding industry declined sharply. Many new jobs were created in tourism.

Today, ships and the shopping mile Stadthafen, the brick Gothic style and the merchant houses stand for the typical Hanseatic coastal flair of Rostock and Warnemünde. The Rostock Council founded Northern Europe's first university in 1419 with papal blessing. Over 14,000 students study at the alma mater today. Several scientists brought Nobel prizes to Rostock. Albert Einstein owes his first honorary doctorate to the university.

Streets and squares

The new market with the town hall and the old market in the eastern part of the old town are memorable. Some of the remains of the formerly rich stock of town houses are still preserved there, including the Gothic, richly decorated Kerkhoffhaus behind the town hall. Nearby is the Große Wasserstrasse with another Gothic gabled house, the Krahnstöver-Haus. In the eastern part of the old town you can also find the former St. Catherine's Monastery, which partly contains Gothic components and is now used as a university for music and theatre. In the Lohgerberstraße, a small-scale development was restored as part of the urban renewal, which gives a good idea of the earlier impact of this part of the old town. This street leads from the Alter Markt to the Nikolaikirche; from there it is not far to Beginenberg Street with the mighty palace-like Beginenberg 1 granary, nearby is also the oldest city gate of Rostock, the 20 Kuhtor.

In the northern part of the old town, the Lagerstrasse and the Wokrenter Strasse in particular are built up with partly renovated town houses. The so-called house tree house in Wokrenter Str. 40 is worth seeing.

In the western extension of the city, near the Kunsthalle, is Reutershagen with the Wiener Platz wikipediacommons, a quiet residential complex in the Heimatschutz style from around 1940, which was built for the employees of the Heinkel aircraft factory.

By train
Main train station, Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 1, 18055 Rostock. The main train station is located south of the Steintor suburb.

Today's main station was put into operation in 1886. Since the renovation at the beginning of the 21st century, the station has had another on the south side in addition to the main entrance building on the north side of the tracks. The entrance building of the main station was a listed building until the end of the 20th century. After the station renovation, it is no longer included in the monument lists. The platforms with eleven platform tracks are reached via a tunnel level between the two reception buildings. Tracks 1 and 2 are mainly used by trains on the Rostock S-Bahn. The Rostock tram stop with two platforms is located on a second tunnel level.

The larger stations on the west-east axis are Hamburg, Schwerin (with Bad Kleinen), Rostock and Stralsund. If you mainly travel on regional trains on this route, the DB MV ticket is particularly recommended for groups. In addition, IC trains run regularly on this route. From the south, the route leads from Berlin via Waren (Müritz) to Rostock. A regional express runs here every two hours, as well as IC connections to Berlin and Dresden several times a day.

There is another railway line, the route (Lübeck-) Bützow - Neubrandenburg - Pasewalk/ Ueckermünde/ Szczecin. Rostock can be reached via this line from East Western Pomerania and Poland with a change in Güstrow.

By bus
The long-distance bus station/ZOB is not far from the southwest exit of the main train station. Eurolines offers daily long-distance bus connections from Rostock to Copenhagen and via Berlin to Dresden. Departures for these lines start at the ferry terminal in Überseehafen or at the Dierkower Kreuz transport hub in the north-east of the city. Since April 25, 2013, the bus company Flix has also been operating a route from Berlin ZOB to Rostock. Stops are Rostock ZOB (friendship square), S-Bahn Warnemünde-Werft and Warnemünde-Strand (youth hostel).

In the street
Coming from the west or east, Rostock can be reached via the A20 Baltic Sea autobahn. If you take the Rostock-West turn-off, you can quickly reach the Baltic Sea resort of Warnemünde on an expressway. From the south, the A19 leads to Rostock. This motorway leads through the toll Warnow Tunnel under the Warnow and onto the expressway in the direction of Warnemünde. For a single passage with a motorcycle or car you pay €4.20 from May to October, the rest of the year €3.40 (2019).

Park
In Warnemünde, parking spaces are very rare, especially in the high season. The major hotels have their own car parks and pass cards. Day trippers should park their car directly at the entrance to the village or park to the west and take advantage of the Park+Ride offers. The city center is extremely traffic-calmed. There are also few parking spaces here.

The parking lots at the cruise terminal are short-term parking only during the season. For long-term parking and transfers to and from the cruise terminal, the Rostock port refers to external service providers.

There are sufficient parking spaces (including long-term parking spaces) for visitors and passengers at the ferry terminal in the seaport.

By boat
From the seaport of Rostock wikipedia there are popular ferry connections to Gedser in Denmark and to Trelleborg and Nynäshamn in Sweden. Around two million passengers used the ferries in 2014. With all ferry companies, it is advisable to obtain information and book online. All current departures and further information on how to get to the ferry terminal are listed at Rostock-Port.de. There are three bus routes to the "Seehafen Fähre" bus stop. For example, bus line 49 from the central bus station / main train station south side (35' travel time) or line 45 from Lütten Klein S-Bahn station via the Warnow tunnel.
Scandlines operates the Rostock - Gedser line with up to 10 departures a day. A crossing takes about 2 hours. The pedestrian ticket in the high season costs €14, a bicycle including an adult €19. The price for a car starts at €39 if booked in advance, the cheapest spontaneous rate is not less than €100.
Two companies operate on the Rostock - Trelleborg route. Stenaline usually runs three times a day, including a night ferry at 10:45 p.m. A pedestrian ticket costs from €17 (online, economy), also with a bicycle. The TT-Line also runs three times a day with a night ferry at 11:00 p.m. Here the pedestrian ticket costs about 24€, with a bicycle 31€. Driving time from 5:30 to 7 hours.
Since August 2021, Hansa Destinations has been operating 3 days a week (sometimes with a stopover in Visby on Gotland) in 18 hours to Nynäshamn, south of Stockholm. A pedestrian ticket costs from €39 (Visby from €29).

The cruise port or Warnemünde Cruise Center is located on the other bank of the Warnow in the seaside resort of Warnemünde. The Rostock-Port.de page contains an overview of the upcoming calls by cruise ships.
Rostock is a popular destination for water sports enthusiasts. There are many guest berths available both in the Rostock city harbor and in Warnemünde.

By bicycle
Rostock is on the long-distance cycle route between Berlin and Copenhagen.
The Baltic Coast Cycle Route circles the entire Baltic Sea and also goes through Warnemünde.

Cuisine and restaurants

One should definitely try fish when visiting Rostock, whether cod boiled or fried, cutter plaice or smoked fish, always a treat.

Also well known is the Mecklenburger Ribenbraten, a roast stuffed with prunes, which is eaten with boiled potatoes and red apple cabbage. The Rostock smoked sausage, similar to a coarse boiled sausage, is traditionally smoked over beech wood. The Rostock lung sausage is particularly popular in the cold season. It goes well in stews, or with kale, where it is cooked slowly as it bursts easily.

Since 1864, the Rostock double caraway man and woman has been produced in the traditional house of Conrad Lehmet in Rostock. He has achieved cult status in the area.

Learn

University of Rostock, the oldest university in Northern Europe. These include numerous buildings that were originally scattered throughout the city but are now (apart from the main building) concentrated mainly in the southern part of the city on the campus there. Among other things, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Engineering wikipediacommons deserves attention as a high-quality modern ensemble.
