Description of Namtok Mae Surin National Park

Namtok Mae Surin National Park is located 8 km (5 mi) North of Mae Hong Son, Mae Hong Son Province in Thailand. It was declared in 1981, as the 37th national park of the country. Namtok Mae Surin National Park covers an area of 396.60 square kilometers. The landscape is formed by mountains, waterfalls and caves. Namtok Mae Surin National Park is best known for the Mae Surin waterfall, from which it takes its name.

 

Topographical features

The topography of Mae Surin Waterfall National Park is a complex of mountains and high mountains. It stretches along the north to south direction. To the east are steep mountains sloping to the west. There are rocky mountains and steep cliffs of different and similar nature. Its height above sea level is in the range of 300-1,752 meters. The highest peak is Doi Pui, followed by Doi Ton Huai Pha Kho, 1,601 meters high, Doi Huai Mee Samad, 1,465 meters high, and Doi Huai Mai Khong, 1,474 meters high. Doi Ban Microwave is 1,474 meters high, Doi Plai Huai Mae Cha Yam is 1,407 meters high, Doi Pha Kho is 1,352 meters high, Doi Ban Huai Ha is 1,359 meters high and Doi Ton Huai Tong Ching is 1,310 meters above sea level. and is the source of many streams, most of which flow from the east to the west. Important types of wood and understory plants include Salao, Samo Phi Phek, Yom Hom, Mafan, thin-bark tabak, ebony, Kradon Soi, rosewood, royal palm, stinking bear, Peka, Sang Nuan bamboo, black Bong bamboo. Wild bamboo, Mahamek herb, red turmeric, Krateu, Bon Tao, Khon Tha thorn, Sakae Khruea, coarse dead worms, etc. Wild animals found include: Giant three-faced bat Found in large numbers at Huai Saloi Cave. Deciduous dipterocarp forest is the plant community that has the largest area cover in the national park. It can be found from an altitude of about 350-1,400 meters above sea level. The types of trees and ground plants found include antimony, dung, hiang, rang, two-leaf pine, rak yai, rakfa, saen yai, tuptao ton, sand cat, wild indigo, peng doi, grass nuea ruesi, grass kai. Khaem Noi grass, Dok Kham grass, etc. Wild animals that live in this type of forest include: Crested goshawk, pygmy owl, orange-headed warbler. Golden-backed four-toed woodpecker, garden bird, cavan, short-eared fin-tailed bird, kingfisher, common chipmunk, bat with white middle ears, yaea, glass chameleon, smooth-scaled mountain skink. Butterfly, Oleander caterpillar Burmese Sergeant Butterfly and ordinary novice butterflies, etc.
The pine forest is located in the area of high mountain ridges. The types of plants found include the two-leaf pine and the three-leaf pine. In addition, many beautiful types of orchids can be found, such as Lady's Slipper, Ueng Sae, Fa Mui, Garland, Squirrel's Tail, Elephant's Elephant, and Ueang Kham, etc.
In the area of various rivers and streams is the habitat of the black-eared eel. Found quite a lot in the Pai River, Moray fish, bull fish, bamboo leaf minnow, leadhead fish, bonefish, antimony fish, small grebe, little egret and green egret.
