EAST BEACH OF VARKIZA
For many Athenians this is their preferred
beach.
Taking this route of sweeping golden sand with shells and
sparkling sea as far as the eye can see, it is easy to understand why
walking by the sea on foot is very popular.
If you're lucky enough to
be walking early in the morning, you'll see the coastline softly basking
in the light, like a freshly baked cookie that's already been nibbled
on.
If you walk a little later, you will see a celestial fireball
that will blind you as it rises, rising like a glowing pendant on the
distant horizon. The gold of the sun will clash with the blue of the
sea.
As a refresher you will have a gentle salty sea breeze, while
the breath of clean air with the strong taste of the sea will give you
the strength to continue your beautiful route. The sand, in the softest
shade of gold, is home to little children's castles You will love this
beach.
ASCLIPIO - TOWN HALL
The walk between the tram terminal
(Asklipieio Voula stop) and Voula Town Hall is along the coastline, it
is about 200 meters, mostly flat and safe.
Along the entire route
there are benches for rest and the SOUTH playground. This route is the
ideal way to discover the hidden coves and deserted beaches of the Voula
Coast.
It is just over 2km and starts at the tram terminus and
continues south along the coastline to the Town Hall.
These are
rock formations along the beaches. There is always something new to see,
as a very picturesque path with the sea constantly visible and with
interesting and sandy beaches alternating with pebble beaches. Every
summer day the sand is completely covered by holidaymakers in their
colorful shorts and bikinis sunbathing.
Walking in this place can
make you fall in love with life, especially when your eyes see the scene
of dazzling sands that ignite the golden sunlight. If you walk barefoot
on the beach, the sand is a soft gold with just the right temperature.
These changes in the landscape will make you feel like it is a warm
embrace, which is combined with the sun-filled sky.
One of the most
beautiful times is towards the end of the day. The area of Voula has a
wonderful sunset.
VARKIZA
The route to the square of Varkiza
gives the walker unique images.
Starting from the square in the
direction of Vouliagmeni, the visitor has the pleasure of walking in one
of the most beautiful places in Athens. Along the entire length you move
next to the sea on an alternating uneven path with large sidewalks for
the most part which reaches via a path to the small ports of
Vouliagmeni.
With its reconstruction in 2019, it became more modern,
while with the widening of the sidewalks and pedestrian crossings, it
became more usable and safer for its residents and visitors.
The
square also has a sculptural landmark, the work of the sculptor Kostis
Georgiou called Taurocathaption.
The sea unfolds to his left while
his steps take place in a clean and green square.
It is worth a stop
at its port, the fishing shelter. You go down to the fish ladder where
there are also the fishermen's stalls full of mullet, cuttlefish, bream,
gopi... If your route is in the morning around 9 o'clock you will find a
lot of good fish.
Continuing towards Alkyonides and the Island you
will find many small lacy beaches while the trees on the sidewalk
towards the sea will generously offer you their shade if your walk is
during a hot day.
SUBMERGED
This is perhaps the shortest of
our routes, but nevertheless the most famous.
A 1.5 km route
around the bay of Vouliagmeni will leave you wishing it was a little
longer. You don't really even need a map as you can almost always see
your way around this magnificent semi-circular bay. If you start from
Lake Vouliagmeni, you will be higher, compared to its level
of
the sea, having a wonderful view of the bay, beaches and water sports.
Continuing down towards the main beach and curving, you will pass many
of the legendary restaurants of the Athenian Riviera and finally meet
the famous Astir Palace Resort.
Walking near the beach and
depending on the weather, you will feel the opera of the sea listening
to the music of the waves, and you will feel like you are walking in a
heavenly path that combines the bright green, the blue of the sky and
the sea and the melodious sound of waves.
You will constantly
feel the "call of the mermaid of the waves" reaching you urging you to
enter the water and you will have to decide whether to resist or give in
to her call. The beach you walk on is an enchanting paradise. The
beating heart of the sea causes a gentle swell and the waves crashing on
the shore have this ancient alchemy. When they are unrolled, it's like
an old parchment unrolling before your eyes with a secret message.
If you could read this message, it would probably only say three
words, but written a thousand times, NEVER LEAVE.
Limanakia Beach
Continuing the road to Varkiza, after the lake of
Vouliagmeni, the rocks form small natural coves on the coastline with
beaches that have blue-green waters. These coves with sea-swept and
wind-swept rocks with little vegetation of small bushes are the famous
Limanakias, which are especially beloved by the Athenians.
The
area is formed by rocky lands that plunge relatively steeply into the
sea waters and form beautiful picturesque little coves.
There are
places ideal for diving and for this reason most diving schools in
Athens operate there.
A dive in the Mistral harbors in Varkiza leaves
satisfied even the most demanding divers.
Life here is rich.
Dracaenas hide in the openings of the rocks, while octopuses, mullet
spawners and sardines frequent the area.
The most famous spot in
the harbors, however, is the "Devil's Well". It is in the second port of
Vouliagmeni and it is an underwater well. There, at a depth of 11
meters, there is a hole with a diameter of 3 meters. At the end of the
well there are protective bars that prevent divers from entering the
underwater cave.
Its location is marked by a red buoy tied with a
rope to the bottom of the sea.
A small canteen serves the needs
of the guests, which turns into a romantic open-air Bar late at night.
The harbors of Vouliagmeni with their wild beauty are a destination for
young people as well as for scuba divers who want to explore the marine
wealth of their seabed.

Eleftherios K. Venizelos (Mournies, Chania, August 23, 1864 – Paris,
March 18, 1936) was a Greek politician who served as Prime Minister of
the Cretan State and seven times Prime Minister of Greece.
As a
politician he played an important role in the Cretan Question as well as
in the political events of Greece from 1910 until his death in 1936.
He organized the Revolution in Therisos and in 1910 assumed the prime
ministership of the Cretan State, which he left a few months later to
assume the prime ministership in Greece at the invitation of the
Military League.
From the start of World War I, he sided with the
Entente, openly disagreeing with the King's attitude.
Because of this
disagreement, although he had been elected prime minister, he was
expelled by the decision of King Constantine I, creating the events of
the National Schism. He returned to the Prime Ministership in the period
1917 - 1920 but left Greece after his defeat in the November 1920
Elections.
He returned in 1924 for a few months and in 1928 was again
elected prime minister.
In January 1935 he became prime minister for
the last time and in March of the same year after the coup attempt he
fled to Paris, where he died.
He was buried on a hill in Akrotiri,
Crete, near the place where he was born.
As Prime Minister of Greece,
he brought about reforms in almost all sectors of the state with the
main purpose of organizing the country according to the standards of a
bourgeois state.
At the same time, he organized a formidable army,
which he exploited in the wars, doubling the territory of Greece.
Three days of commemorative events for Asia Minor Hellenism that
includes historical tributes, theatrical events, presentations and
narratives related to the refugee issue, concerts and dance events.
It is an institution of memory for the refugee families who lived in
Voula in 22 and who created a dynamic community and distinguished
themselves in all the activities of the social life of the area.
With a series of events, the Municipality of Vari Voulas Vouliagmenis
gives the residents of the city the opportunity to learn unknown aspects
of perhaps the greatest disaster of Hellenism, and to remember the
tragic moments experienced by the Greeks of Asia Minor.
The
three-day event for Asia Minor takes place every year on the first
fortnight of September in Imion Square, in Voula.
The Municipality of Vari Voulas Vouliagmeni is divided into 3
