Aveiro is a city in central Portugal, capital of the District and located on the coast. In tourism, Aveiro is known as "The Portuguese Venice", due to the Ria de Aveiro, a navigable canal that cuts through the city, where it is possible to take gondola rides, just like in the Italian city.

As a result of the dynastic crisis of 1383–1385, a skirmish occurred
in Aveiro between Castilian troops and Portuguese knights of the Order
of Christ. Near what is now the town of Eixo, 120 knights commanded by
João Cabral came to meet a small joint expedition of Castilian troops
with a total of 250 soldiers. Around 210 foot soldiers and a mix of 40
knights and crossbowmen that included the Galician Juan de Batista. Late
in the morning of October 17, 1384, the skirmish occurred that resulted
in a decisive Portuguese victory. The parish priest at the end of the
day summed up the battle and, although probably an exaggerated number,
it is said that 46 Castilians and only 7 Portuguese died. At the end of
the day, what remained of the Castilian troops retreated, taking refuge
near what is now Vilar Formoso, to later join the army of Juan I of
Castile.
At the end of the 16th century and beginning of the 17th
century, the instability of the vital communication between the Ria and
the sea led to the closing of the canal, preventing the use of the port
(see Port of Aveiro) and creating unhealthy conditions, caused by the
stagnation of the waters. of the lagoon, causes that led to a large
decrease in the number of inhabitants, many of whom emigrated, creating
fishing villages along the Portuguese coast and, consequently, were the
basis of a major economic and social crisis. It was, however, and
curiously, during this period of recession that one of the most notable
temples in Aveiro was built, in the midst of Philippine domination: the
Church of Misericórdia.
In 1759, by Royal Decree of April 11, D.
José I elevated Aveiro to the status of city, a few months after having
condemned its last duke to the scaffold for treason, a title created in
1547 by D. João III.
She was made an Officer of the Military
Order of the Tower and Sword, of Valour, Loyalty and Merit on 29 March
1919 and an Honorary Member of the Order of Liberty on 23 March 1998.
Aveiro was one of the main ports involved in cod fishing during the
dictatorial period.
It is a territorially discontinuous municipality, as it comprises some river islands in the Ria de Aveiro and a portion of the coastal peninsula (parish of São Jacinto) almost 25 km long that closes the estuary to the west. The municipality has land and water borders across the Ria with Ílhavo and Murtosa. It also borders Albergaria-a-Velha, Oliveira do Bairro, Vagos and Águeda.
Aveiro has a Mediterranean climate of the Csb type, that is, with mild summers. Days with temperatures above 30ºC are very rare, not reaching 10 per year on average, but summers are dry. Winters are mild and rainy, with days below 0 °C occurring even more rarely, around 2 per year. This is partly due to the effect that the Ria de Aveiro has on moderating temperatures.
