Barcelos is a Portuguese city inserted in the sub-region of Cávado (NUT
III), belonging to the North region (NUT II) and the District of Braga.
It is the seat of the Municipality of Barcelos, which has a total area
of 378.9 km2, 116,766 inhabitants in 2021 and a population density of 308
inhabitants per km2, subdivided into 61 parishes. The municipality is
limited to the north by the municipalities of Viana do Castelo and Ponte de
Lima, to the east by Vila Verde and Braga, to the southeast by Vila Nova de
Famalicão, to the southwest by Póvoa de Varzim and to the west by Esposende.
In Barcelos there are eleven national monuments, eight properties of
public interest and five monuments in the process of classification.

Craftsmanship
Barcelos is a land rich in handicrafts, being known as the capital of
Portuguese handicrafts. Existing the most diverse types of art, tourist
routes were created. It is known for the traditional rooster of Barcelos
Movie theater
The city of Barcelos was served by two movie
theaters, managed by the company Cinemas Cinemax. They closed in 2017.
It also has the Cineclube de Barcelos, which projects alternative films
in the Auditorium of the Municipal Library.

The band Imortalis was the first to
go international with a mini-tour through the state of Bahia, in March
2000.
The band Oratory is one of the best known Portuguese bands in
the world, in the melodic power metal genre.

Barcelos has been a city inhabited by people since the beginning, as
traces in various areas of Barcelos indicate. Approximately in the year
1177, Barcelos by the hands of D. Afonso Henriques received the letter
of charter and in 1227 the city began to attract more population.
Already in 1928, Barcelos was elevated to the category of city.

Primary sector - there are large areas dedicated to
agriculture, namely the production of fodder for feeding bovine animals,
being the largest national dairy producer. Given the importance of the
agricultural sector, the largest "company" operating in this
municipality is Cooperativa Agrícola de Barcelos.
In 2007, the volume
of milk produced was more than 139 million liters, decreasing 2.07%
compared to 2006, that is, around 3 million liters less, increasing the
amount of milk paid to production in the same period from 43 million
euros to 48.5 million euros.
The vitiniculture subsector includes
the demarcated region of Vinho Verde, and there are several farms with
their own production and brand. Quinta de Azevedo, owned by Sogrape,
with the brands Quinta de Azevedo and Gazela, Quinta Convento da
Franqueira, Quinta de Paços, Sociedade Agrícola Quinta de Santa Maria,
Quinta de Vilar de Frades, Quinta do Barco, Quinta do Bosque, Boucinha
Wines , Campelo wines.

In terms of higher education, the municipality has a
Polytechnic Institute, the Polytechnic Institute of Cávado and Ave.
There are six public schools with secondary education: Basic and
Secondary School of Vila Cova, Basic and Secondary School of Vale
D'Este, Basic and Secondary School of Vale do Tamel, Alcaides de Faria
Secondary School, Barcelos Secondary School, Secondary School de
Barcelinhos, a Music Conservatory, four professional schools, eight
Basic Schools (2nd and 3rd cycle), ninety-seven first cycle schools and
seventy-eight establishments dedicated to pre-school education. Barcelos
is served by the services of the following schools: Colégio Didálvi
(2nd, 3rd cycle and secondary), Colégio La Salle and Colégio Menino de
Deus (1st cycle).
The municipality of Barcelona, like other
Portuguese municipalities, is reformulating the distribution and quality
of the teaching equipment offered, and for this purpose Educational
Centers will be built.
Education is a fundamental pillar for the
development of a society that is fairer, more educated, more
competitive, with a greater degree of civic participation and with a
greater chance of employability. Therefore, it should be noted that in
this municipality there is an illiteracy rate of 7% and a school dropout
rate of 3% and a low number of Graduates.
