Description of Sochi Art Museum

The Sochi Art Museum named after Dmitry Zhilinsky is a cultural and educational institution in the Central District of the city of Sochi.

The building was built according to the project of the academician of architecture I. V. Zholtovsky in 1936, it was intended for the Commissioner of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the USSR for the construction of the resort city of Sochi-Matsesta. For several decades, the City Committee of the CPSU was located here. The building of the art museum is an architectural monument of federal significance. The end face of the building from the side of Kurortny Prospekt is decorated with a sculpture of a bricklayer by N. K. Wentzel.

Since 1972, the Sochi Exhibition Hall has been located here, since 1976 - the Sochi Art Museum.

The museum has collected about 6,000 exhibits of ancient, Russian, Soviet, foreign art in the following sections: painting, graphics, sculpture, arts and crafts, art crafts.

The permanent exhibition covers the period from the 1st century BC. to contemporary art and represents the Mzymta treasure, as well as such masters as V. E. Makovsky, M. K. Klodt, L. F. Lagorio, P. P. Konchalovsky, S. V. Gerasimov, P. V. Williams, I. I. Mashkov, S. Nekritin, N. I. Andronov, D. D. Zhilinsky.

The exhibition halls host monthly exhibitions dedicated to the art of individual artists, creative associations, representing collections of public and private collections. The museum has an art salon where you can buy works of art, art antiques, works of jewelry masters, products of folk art crafts and the Kaliningrad Amber Combine.

 

History

Municipal budgetary institution of culture of the city of Sochi "Sochi Art Museum. Dmitry Dmitrievich Zhilinsky" is the legal successor of the State Exhibition Hall of Fine Arts in the city of Sochi, established by order of the Ministry of Culture of the RSFSR dated June 24, 1971 No. Committee of the Sochi City Council of Deputies dated February 03, 1988 No. 65 "On the transformation of the Sochi Exhibition Hall into the Sochi Art Museum."

The building in which the MBUK of Sochi "SHM them. D.D. Zhilinsky, built in 1936 according to the project of academician of architecture Ivan Vladislavovich Zholtovsky, is rightfully considered not only the city-forming beginning of the city center, but also one of its main architectural monuments of the 30s of the last century. This is no coincidence, for many years the building housed the administrative center of the Commissioner of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the USSR for the construction of the resort city of Sochi - Matsesta.

History of MBUK Sochi D.D. Zhilinsky" covers almost half a century. During this time, starting from 1972, when the building was being reconstructed - an architectural monument of federal significance and the museum was called the Exhibition Hall of Fine Arts, it never stopped scientific and educational, fund and exposition-exhibition work. A large number of paintings by Soviet artists of the 1930s - 1980s were donated by Sochi health resorts.

Over the period of its existence, the museum has been visited by more than three and a half million people. Up to 8 expositions of permanent and temporary storage are exhibited in the Sochi Art Museum at the same time, which arouse the constant interest of residents and guests of the resort.

Over the years, the museum has hosted exhibitions from the collections of museums in Italy (Genoese mezzaro), Germany and Austria (Contemporary Art of the 20th century), Great Britain (Magic Pencil and video art "Burnt Verses"), major museums in the USSR and the Russian Federation, including exhibitions from State Hermitage Museum, State Art Gallery of Armenia, photo exhibitions dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of the Baptism of Russia, personal exhibitions of N. and S. Roerichs, D.D. Zhilinsky, Z.K. Tsereteli and others.

In 2020, the museum was named after our famous countryman - People's Artist of the RSFSR, Academician of the Academy of Arts of the USSR, professor, laureate of State Prizes, Soviet and Russian painter and graphic artist Dmitry Dmitrievich Zhilinsky.

Currently, the museum has a magnificent collection of 6,485 items. The collection of the museum represents the fine arts of different historical periods, in a chronological sense, the collection of the museum opens with antique silver of the 1st - 2nd centuries. AD, then an ancient Russian icon of the 18th-20th centuries, a collection of paintings, drawings and works of decorative and applied art of the 19th-20th centuries.

On the eve of the XX Winter Olympic and XI Winter Paralympic Games in 2014, the museum was equipped with modern equipment, including the installation of the Holographic Pyramid software and hardware complex with multimedia content, 3D monitors, 3D cabin, audio guides, virtual stand attendant, information and sensory kiosks. Outdoor LED screens are located on the square in front of the museum building. Especially for the museum, the attractions "Journey to the Picture" and "Draw a Picture", "Sphere" and "Magic Hall" were developed.

The museum has all the conditions for accessibility for people with disabilities, including two elevators and a lift, audio guides for the museum's permanent collection in three languages - Russian, English and French.

Over the entire period of its existence, the museum has been visited by more than 3.5 million people, and today it can be said with confidence that the Sochi Art Museum is a true scientific and educational center and a leading center of culture on the Black Sea coast of the Caucasus.
