The name of the city is derived from the hydronym of the river Berd. The etymology of the hydronym has not been finally elucidated. According to I. A. Vorobyova, the explanation of the hydronym "Berd" through the Tatar "bird" - "gave away" is doubtful both from a grammatical and semantic point of view. According to D. Ya. Rezun, “the word“ Berd ”in its historical etymology is of Tatar origin, but it was taken by Russian Cossacks from the local population or brought here by Tomsk people - that is the question.”
The area of Berdsk, according to data for 2008, is 67.06 km². The
city is located in the right-bank part of the Novosibirsk region on the
shore of the Berdsky Bay (the flooded valley of Berdi, formed during the
creation of the Novosibirsk reservoir). The terrain is flat, in the
west, between the city and the shore of the Novosibirsk reservoir, there

At the beginning of the 18th century, the Berdsky prison was
erected. By the end of the 18th century, it became a large economic
center of the Upper Ob region, and a project appeared to transfer
the provincial center from Tomsk to the Berdsky prison. In 1783, the
Kolyvan province was created, and in May 1783 Empress Catherine II
issued a decree: "On the existence of the provincial town of the
Kolyvan province in the Berdsk prison with the name of it Kolyvan."
However, in 1797 they had to abandon the project, the Kolyvan
province was abolished (its territory was part of the Tobolsk
province), and Kolyvan, having lost the status of the provincial
center, began to be called the Berdskoye village. Since 1804, the
village of Berdskoye became part of the Tomsk province. In 1917, the
village of Berdskoye became part of the new Novo-Nikolaevsky
district, which in 1921 became part of the Novo-Nikolaevsky
province, which was separated from the Tomsk province.
Since
May 25, 1925, according to the decree of the Presidium of the
All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the RSFSR, all provinces,
districts and volosts in Siberia have been liquidated. The Siberian
Territory was formed, and in the place of the former districts and
volosts, in accordance with the jurisdiction of the district
committees of the RCP (b) that appeared in 1920-1923, districts were
created, one of which was the Berdsky district of the
Novonikolaevsky district; the village of Berdskoye became its
administrative center. In 1929 the village of Berdskoye received the
status of an urban settlement.
By the decree of the
All-Russian Central Executive Committee of July 30, 1930, the
Siberian Territory was divided into the East Siberian and West
Siberian Territories; At the same time, the districts were
abolished, and the Berdsk region passed into direct subordination to
the authorities of the West Siberian Territory. On October 1, 1933,
the Berdsk district was abolished, and the dacha settlement Berdsk
was subordinated to the Novosibirsk City Council.
On
September 28, 1937, the West Siberian Territory was abolished and
the Novosibirsk Region was formed, the authorities of which were
located in Novosibirsk. On February 9, 1944, the working village of
Berdsk received the status of a city of regional subordination. Due
to the construction of the Novosibirsk reservoir, the main territory
of the city was in the flood zone, and as a result, the city was
rebuilt around the existing area near the railway station, 8 km from
the old location. The relocation of the city began in 1953 and was
completed by 1957.

but has been used as an official symbol since 1996. The authors of the
emblem are G. V. Kuzhelev, S. V. Morzhakov, V. N. Smirnov (Novosibirsk
city).
The emblem is a green and silver shield, on which there is
a wide azure wavy band, bordered on top with silver and connected to
another narrower azure wavy band placed in a silver field. Below is a
black prison with a palisade and one two-tiered tower with silver closed
gates.
The symbolism of the coat of arms of the city of Berdsk
uses the colors traditional for the symbols of Siberia: green and white.
The green color, as conceived by the creators of the coat of arms,
symbolizes the taiga, hope, abundance, health and freedom. White color
is a symbol of snow, purity, devotion and wisdom.
A wide wavy
strip symbolizes the Ob River, a narrow strip - Berd, at the confluence
of which in 1716 the Berdsky prison was founded. The image of the prison
is also present on the coat of arms, emphasizing "historical continuity,
careful attitude and preservation by the inhabitants of the city from
generation to generation of their traditions, culture, customs."
