Tevriz is a working village in the Tevriz district of the Omsk region. Center of the Tevriz urban settlement. Population - 6949 people (2020).
Topography and Landforms
The topography of Tevriz is characterized
by its position on the flat Ishim Plain, part of the larger West
Siberian Plain, which dominates much of Omsk Oblast. The terrain is
extremely level, with minimal elevation changes typical of the
region—elevations in the oblast range from 41 meters at the lowest
points along the Irtysh River to about 150 meters at higher upland
areas, and Tevriz likely falls in the lower end of this spectrum, around
50-100 meters above sea level. Parent rocks in the area consist
primarily of clays and loams, supporting soils such as floodplain acidic
soils near the rivers and sod-podzolic deep-gley and gley soils in
surrounding areas. These soil types are common in river floodplains and
forested zones, making the land somewhat fertile but prone to
waterlogging.
In the broader context of Omsk Oblast, the southern
regions feature open steppes and forest-steppes, but Tevriz, being in
the north, transitions into more forested and swampy taiga landscapes.
This northern shift introduces wooded areas with gullies along the
Irtysh, creating microclimates that are slightly more humid and
vegetated compared to the drier southern plains. The oblast as a whole
is marked by extensive marshes and sandy-silty soils, with Tevriz
exemplifying this through its proximity to riverine wetlands. Natural
features include numerous small lakes and swamps, though larger
oblast-wide lakes like Tenis-Saltaim, Ik, Ebeyty, Ulzhay, and
Tobol-Kushly are scattered nearby, contributing to the region's
biodiversity.
Rivers and Water Bodies
Tevriz is strategically
located on the left (eastern) bank of the Irtysh River, at the
confluence with the smaller Tevriz River, which flows into it. The
Irtysh, a major tributary of the Ob River, is the dominant waterway in
Omsk Oblast and serves as a vital artery for transportation, with river
distances to Omsk at 649 km. During the navigation season (typically
late spring to early fall), passenger services operate along the Irtysh
using vessels like the motor ships "Chernyshevsky" and "Rodina,"
connecting Tevriz to cities such as Omsk, Tobolsk, and Salekhard. In
off-seasons, a ferry provides crossings. The Tevriz River adds to the
local hydrology, supporting floodplain ecosystems.
The oblast's river
network includes other tributaries like the Ishim, Om, Osha, and Tara,
which feed into the Irtysh basin. Tevriz benefits from this system, with
a notable 330-meter wooden bridge across a nearby lake—the longest
wooden bridge in Omsk Oblast and one of the longest in Russia. These
water bodies influence local microclimates, creating "oasis" effects
with fertile, wooded landscapes amid the otherwise flat plains. However,
the region is susceptible to seasonal flooding, particularly in spring,
due to snowmelt.
Climate
Tevriz experiences a sharply
continental climate with subarctic influences (Köppen classification
Dfc), featuring significant temperature swings between seasons, cold
winters, and relatively warm summers. Winters are frigid, snowy, and
overcast, while summers are comfortable and partly cloudy. The climate
is drier in the south of the oblast but becomes slightly more
precipitous northward toward Tevriz due to taiga proximity. Average
annual precipitation is around 464 mm, with the highest in July (72 mm)
and lowest in February (15 mm). The oblast sees predominantly sunny days
overall (300-400 mm annual precipitation region-wide), but Tevriz's
northern location may experience more cloud cover and humidity.
Temperature Extremes: Annual range from -12°F to 73°F; rarely below
-35°F or above 83°F. Winters (November-March) see averages from -42°F to
-30°F in extreme cold snaps, with January being the coldest. Summers
(May-September) peak in July at 73°F highs.
Precipitation and Snow:
Wet period April-December; snow dominant October-April (7.4 months of
snow accumulation). Growing season lasts about 4 months (late May to
late September).
Humidity and Wind: Brief muggy period in summer
(June-August); windier in fall-spring (up to 9.2 mph in March/April),
calmer in summer. Winds often from west, north, or south depending on
season.
Other: Daylight varies dramatically (6.5 hours in December to
18 hours in June). Solar energy peaks in summer (up to 6.2 kWh/m² in
June).
Compared to southern Omsk (e.g., the city of Omsk, with
slightly warmer averages: January -6°F to July 77°F), Tevriz is cooler
and more prone to prolonged cold due to its northern latitude.
Natural Resources and Environment
Tevriz's environment reflects its
taiga-influenced setting, with forests, swamps, and riverine habitats
supporting diverse wildlife. The region hosts two beaver sanctuaries:
the Tevriz Beaver Sanctuary and the Tuisky Beaver Game Sanctuary.
Protected species include the West Siberian beaver, Siberian sturgeon
(in the Irtysh), and plants like the real lady's slipper and
large-flowered lady's slipper. The oblast has 28 specially protected
natural areas, including parks like "Bird's Harbor" near Omsk, which may
extend conservation efforts northward.
Natural resources include
natural gas, with the Tevriz field (discovered in 1971) holding approved
reserves of 526 million cubic meters. Forestry is prominent due to taiga
proximity, and the rivers support fishing. However, the flat, marshy
terrain can lead to environmental challenges like soil erosion and
seasonal flooding.
In the XII - XIII centuries. before the arrival of Russian settlers,
Yugra, Demyanovsk, Vasyugan and Turkic-speaking tribes lived here -
Kourdak, Yan-Irtysh, Tovutuz.
For the first time, the village of

factory, an oil factory, a fish factory.
In the post-war years, 9
industrial enterprises functioned on the territory of Tevriz. The Tevriz
timber industry enterprise was the largest enterprise in the region.
In 1987, Tevriz acquired the status of an urban-type settlement.
