Tomsk is a city in Russia, the administrative
center of the region and district of the same name, located in the
east of Western Siberia on the banks of the Tom River. The oldest
large educational, scientific and innovation center in Siberia: 9
universities, 15 research institutes, a special economic zone of
technology-innovative type and 6 business incubators. He is a member
of the Association of Siberian and Far Eastern Cities and the
association “Network of Major Cities of Asia”.
The city is
rich in monuments of wooden and stone architecture of the XVIII-XX
centuries. It's population is 574 002 people (2018) that live in the city.
Tomsk, its satellite town Seversk and its suburbs form the Tomsk
city agglomeration with a population of about 728 thousand people
(2011).
By plane
There are relatively few flights to Tomsk:
several times a day from Moscow and occasionally from St. Petersburg and
large cities of the Urals and Siberia. The larger airport of Novosibirsk
is located 5-7 hours drive from Tomsk.
1 Bogashevo Airport (IATA:
TOF). 6:00–19:00. The new terminal is clean and comfortable, with
separate arrivals and departures areas. On the first floor there is a
stylish, but not cheap "Viennese Coffee House", and on the second floor
there is a much more democratic dining room "Meeting" with the usual
Tomsk prices and the corresponding menu. In a clean area, there is the
same "Viennese Coffee House" with Moscow prices and a small menu in case
you still need a bite to eat. There are many souvenir shops in the
terminal. On the ground floor there is a storage room. Free WiFi.
The
station square contains a couple of regular grocery stores and a fence
through which you can watch takeoffs and landings. Opposite the
terminal, the AeroHotel five-story building (tel. +7 (3822) 96-45-75, +7
(903) 952-77-93), from 950 rubles per bed in a six-bed room and from
1,700 rubles for a single room - judging by photographs, the conditions
are not bad, the repair has been made. To the left of the terminal, in a
new building, there is another hotel - Skyline, more expensive and
modern, but not specially marked in any way. Please note that the
terminal of the Tomsk airport is closed at night, and flights are mostly
in the morning. If you arrive in the evening, you can only wait at the
hotel for departure.
How to get there: the airport is located 25
km southeast of the city center. The road to the airport is replete with
speed limits, by car it takes at least half an hour. Once every 15-30
minutes, bus No. 119 runs on old PAZs crowded during rush hours
(schedule), it reaches the southern border of the city in less than an
hour, key stops in the city: pl. South, vkz. Tomsk-1, pl. Lenin.
By train
The city stands aside from the main line of the
Trans-Siberian Railway, from the Taiga station, the Tomsk railway line
begins, along which you can get to Tomsk by electric trains. There is no
direct high-quality road between Taiga and Tomsk (however, its
construction is planned). As of June 2017, it is possible to get from
Taiga to Tomsk by car via Kemerovo or Mariinsk, making a significant
detour.
There are 2 railway stations in Tomsk:
2 Tomsk-1.
It is located in the southeastern part of the city.
3 Tomsk-2.
Located near the current geographical center of the city
To the
north-east of the Tomsk-2 station there is a large railway station
Tomsk-Severny, and to the south-west of Tomsk-1 - the Predtechensk
station, to the north-east of Tomsk-Severny - the Kopylovo station,
which since 2005 has been part of Tomsk . There are also several
passenger stops in Tomsk. The city is connected by rail with Moscow
(branded train No. 37/38 "Tomich"), Anapa, Barnaul, Novokuznetsk, within
the region - with Bely Yar. In addition, a number of non-stop wagons
run. Electric trains connect Tomsk with the Taiga station on the
Trans-Siberian Railway. To the north, the Tomsk branch is electrified to
st. Kopylovo.
By car
A branch from the federal highway P255
"Siberia" (to the north, near the city of Yurga) leads to Tomsk, along
which you can get into the city from the west from Novosibirsk and from
the east from Kemerovo. The city is connected by other roads:
In
the west with Novosibirsk (through Kozhevnikovo, Kolyvan). Compared to
the P255, the road to Novosibirsk is a little longer, but it has a
high-quality surface, and, most importantly, it is much less loaded.
In the east - with the Mariinsky, the P400 road.
In the north - with
districts of the region.
By bus
4 Bus station, 68 Kirov Ave.
(on the square in front of the Tomsk-1 railway station). Bus service is
available with Novosibirsk, Kemerovo (daily, many times), Barnaul,
Novokuznetsk, Yurga, Mariinsky, Anzhero-Sudzhensk, Belovo (several times
a day), Krasnoyarsk (daily), Abakan, Chernogorsk, Minusinsk,
Belokurikha, Gorno-Altaisk ( once a week or more often), near other
cities and towns, within the region - with all regional centers, to
which there are year-round roads, and a number of other settlements, as
well as with suburban villages. International bus routes connect Tomsk
with the cities of Kazakhstan (Ust-Kamenogorsk, Pavlodar, Karaganda,
Semipalatinsk) and Kyrgyzstan (Bishkek). There is an online ticket sale
on the bus station website.
On the ship
There is no regular
intercity water communication, only suburban lines operate, but ships
from Novosibirsk sometimes call. Motor ships depart from the Tomsk River
Station to the opposite bank and back, flights are carried out along the
Ob to Krasny Yar, making several stops along the way, and pleasure
flights are carried out. Within the region between Kargask and Strezhev,
as well as Nikolsky and Krasny Yar, a ferry service operates on the Ob.
Five tram and six trolleybus routes. 25 city and 9
suburban bus routes. Small-seat buses such as PAZ, Ford, Peugeot operate
in the city mainly. On suburban routes come across normal buses. Pay at
the front door. When the flight is unloaded, a half-empty bus goes by,
skipping stops, so before the upcoming exit, please notify the driver
loudly and clearly in advance.
Some shuttle buses are equipped
with a voice information system that automatically announces the names
of stops (obviously, by reference to GPS).
The fare in the city
(2021): for pensioners by age - 19 rubles, for everyone else - 23
rubles, after 21:00 - 25 rubles. Oversized baggage is also paid in the
amount of 10 rubles per seat.
In Tomsk, more monuments of wooden architecture have been preserved than anywhere else in Russia, in the style of Siberian Baroque, Art Nouveau, Classicism. Much of this splendor, for various reasons, has been lost, but something remains. So in Tomsk, the only city in Siberia, groups of nearby old wooden houses have been preserved, which they are trying to transfer under the protection of UNESCO, since 2004 several such groups of houses have been restored. A city program has been adopted to preserve at least 701 old houses. At the same time, there is very little space left for building within the boundaries of Tomsk, and there are almost no vacant places in the city center, so the wooden buildings of old Tomsk are being destroyed by developers who erect new buildings in its place, which do not always meet elementary aesthetic requirements. There are also masterpieces of stone architecture in Tomsk, including the beginning of the 20th century, which give the city a truly unique look. The order of the local administration on the prohibition of new construction on the site of deliberately burned houses came into force. In such places it is allowed to break parks and squares.
There are a lot of interesting monuments of wooden
architecture in Tomsk, scattered throughout the city, but the most
spectacular and famous are located in the square between Lenin Avenue,
Frunze Avenue, Krasnoarmeiskaya Street and Kirov Avenue.
1
Russian-German house, st. Krasnoarmeyskaya, 71 (Upper Yelan). One of the
best examples of Tomsk wooden moerne was built in 1902. The
semi-basement floor is brick, what stands on it is completely wooden.
The most important (but not the only) thing here is a faceted tower with
a spire, a mezzanine, and, as always, platbands and just a facade
pattern. The house is painted blue (pattern in white). The German
cultural center is located inside.
2 House with dragons (House with
chimeras, Bystritsky's mansion), st. Krasnoarmeyskaya, 68 (Yurtochnaya
Gora). The house was built in 1917 according to the design of the local
architect Vikentiy Orzheshko. This is a wooden unpainted house, with
skates and a tower. On the cornice are the heads of fantastical animals
commonly associated with dragons, and it is sometimes suggested that
their design is taken from the stave church at Borgunn in Norway.
However, no one knows for sure, and there is no information that
Orzheshko has ever been to Norway, but the house really looks like a
Norwegian church.
3 Belinsky Street, 19, Belinsky Street, 19 (Upper
Yelan). Wooden modernist monument built in 1917. Two-story house with
bay windows, turrets and spiers. Painted in green, decor in white.
4 House with Firebirds, 67/1 Krasnoarmeyskaya Street (Upper Yelan).
This wooden house was built in 1903 (architect Fedorovsky) and, despite
the recent rather free restoration, remains one of the best monuments of
Tomsk wooden Art Nouveau thanks to several wooden figurines of firebirds
on the roof. The shape of the house is unusual, the architect (or the
architects of subsequent reconstructions) obviously went too far with
decorative elements, making here verandas, mezzanines, turrets, and even
a spire at the top (to which two firebirds are also attached). Platbands
of remarkable quality and quantity, they are hung even where it is
difficult to imagine them on an ordinary house. The house is painted
yellow, all decor is white.
5 Kuznetsova Street, 17, Kuznetsova
Street, 17 (Upper Yelan). A two-storey wooden house in Art Nouveau
style, with a bay window on which stands a four-sided tower. Even more
interesting is the northern facade with a balcony (facing the
crossroads). Added to all this is a wonderful carving.
6 Kuznetsova
Street, 30, Kuznetsova Street, 30 (Upper Yelan). The two-storey house
was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is built from
unpainted logs, and only the decor is painted white, creating a contrast
to the brown logs. On the other hand, you can study Art Nouveau
architecture from the decor - there are architraves of specific forms,
and bay windows, and just vertical lines in the upper part of the
building. A memorial plaque has been installed on the southern facade,
informing that the composer Edison Denisov was born in the house in
1929.
7 Vershinin Street, 12, Vershinin Street, 12 (Upper Yelan). The
house belonged to Vikenty Ozheshko and was built in 1911 according to
his design. This is a one-story house of a rather complex shape, on the
facade there is a bay window and two pediments, on the side (it can be
seen from Herzen Street) there are two more. The house is logged, the
lower part is unpainted, the upper part is shared by boards painted in
blue-gray, and white decor is laid out on the boards. As expected, solid
modern.
8 Frunze Avenue, 12, Frunze Avenue, 12 (Upper Yelan). An
example of a classicist wooden house, extremely rare for Siberia, was
built in the 1860s. Don't expect any frills, just plain timberwork and a
mezzanine upstairs.
9 House of merchant Gromov, Gagarin street, 42
(Urzhatka). The Art Nouveau house built in 1908 is completely unusual in
form. Among other things, note the carvings throughout the lower tier,
including those with deer antlers, and the decorated turret in the
northwest corner of the house. Jan 2017 edit
Museum of Wooden
Architecture, Kirov Ave., 7 (transfer to the stop "TPU".). ☎
+7(3822)56-40-97. Tue–Sun 10:00–17:30. Branch of the Tomsk Regional Art
Museum. It is located in a wooden house built in 1910, which belonged to
and was designed by Andrey Kryachkov, a famous Siberian architect.
Inside, details of wooden decor are collected - platbands, carvings,
doors, etc. - from the destroyed monuments of wooden architecture of
Tomsk, and from all this a story about wooden Tomsk and, in particular,
about the architect Kryachkov was made.
10 Tatar settlement. On Tatarskaya Street and its
environs there is a large complex of wooden buildings with many
interesting buildings. Historically, Siberian Tatars and Bukharans
settled in this place of Tomsk. There are two mosques here, and both are
very impressive. You will hardly find bright colors among wooden houses,
such as, for example, the more famous house with firebirds, and many
houses are in a deplorable state, but the area looks very integral and
authentic, and at the same time it is located almost in the center of
the city .
11 House of the merchant Khamitov, Maxim Gorky Street, 35
(Tatarskaya Sloboda). The house was built in 1905 in eclectic style. In
fact, this is a medium-sized palace, and Khamitov was a wealthy Tatar
merchant. Outside, completely different elements are combined, some
reminiscent of classicism, others modern. Please note that only plant
motifs are used in the ornament, but not animals - the customer of the
house was a believing Muslim. The center of Tatar culture is located in
the house, excursions and other educational events are held.
12 Red
Mosque , Tatarskaya street, 24 (Tatarskaya Sloboda).
13 White Mosque,

Museum of the History of Tomsk, st. Bakunina, 3 (passage to the stop "Ploshchad Lenina"). ☎ +7(3822)65-72-55. The main exposition of the museum is quite modest, and the most interesting thing here is the opportunity to climb the observation tower (fire tower), which offers an excellent panoramic view in all directions. On the territory of the museum there are: a reconstruction - a fragment of the Tomsk fortress, a stone on the site of the foundation of Tomsk and a cannon. The road to the museum is also interesting: a small climb up the mountain along Bakunin Street is a real pavement, not hidden under asphalt. You can buy souvenirs in the museum.
14 Resurrection Church, Oktyabrsky Vzvoz, 10. It is
located on the Cape of the Resurrection Mountain, which received the
name of the temple. The church was built in a rare Siberian baroque
style, combining elements of Russian and Ukrainian baroque. The original
church was wooden. The temple, dilapidated from frequent fires, was
decided to be made of stone. So in 1807 the construction of a new stone
church was completed. In Soviet times, some of the valuables were
confiscated from the temple, but in 1980-1990 it was returned to its
historical appearance.

20 Epiphany Cathedral.
21 Camp garden. It is located in the south-east of the city, at the beginning of Lenin Street, on the banks of the Tom River. A popular place for walking among the townspeople. An interesting name for the park was given by the location of the camps of the Tomsk Infantry Regiment in this place in the 18th-19th centuries. There is a memorial complex in the park: the Eternal Flame, steles with the names of Tomsk citizens who died in battles, a sculptural composition - the Motherland gives weapons to her son. The park stands on a high bank, from here a picturesque view for several kilometers of the river and the plain opens up.

In spring and summer, there is a danger of tick bites.
If this happens, you should immediately contact one of the following
medical institutions that have laboratory equipment for examining ticks
for infection with viruses harmful to humans:
Interuniversity
Hospital. st. Kyiv, 74.
Regional Clinic Hospital. st. Ivan Chernykh,
96.
Children's Hospital N°1. Moscow tract, 4 (children).
If an
animal is bitten by a tick, contact one of the veterinary clinics.
Important: Only a live tick is suitable for laboratory research, so
you should not try to crush or poison the tick, and also, without the
appropriate skills, remove it from the body.
Fishing in the
river. Tom, as it were, is not prohibited, only all the fish caught must
be checked for radioactive contamination, for which specialized
departments of the SES worked in the Soviet years. Swimming in the river
or not is your choice. People bathe... In general, the city is very
unfavorable with oncological diseases because of the glorious
neighboring city of Seversk, where nuclear weapons components, highly
enriched uranium and plutonium, were made for a long time.
Crime.
In the 90s of the last century, the whole city was divided between youth
groups. In a foreign area, they immediately asked: "Hey, kid, whose will
you be?". Now this business is much easier, but since there are a lot of
young people in the city, there is always a risk of running into
hooligans. But in general, the city is quite safe.
Traffic jams.
This is the scourge of Tomsk. There are a lot of old narrow streets in
the city, which are completely not designed for the flow of cars, so you
can easily get into a traffic jam.
Tomsk was founded in 1604 on the Tom River as part of the Tobolsk category; since 1629 - the central city of the Tomsk category. The researchers of the 18th century derived the hydronym "Tom" from the Ket tom, tom - "river". At the same time, some linguists believe that this word in the Ket language is a generic designation for a river, while others believe that this word was a proper name and had a special meaning. According to A.P. Dulzon, the word "volume" indicates a river with dark water. Some modern authors deny the terminological meaning of this word and allow the formation of a tom from the Ket tum - "dark, black" or interpret the tom as the Turkic-Mongolian "big, main".
On January 20 (30), 1604, an embassy headed by the prince of the
Eushta Tatars Toyan arrived in Moscow at the court of Boris Godunov
with a request to accept them under Russian citizenship and protect
them from attacks by their warlike neighbors - the Yenisei Kyrgyz
and Kalmyks. In response to this, Boris Godunov signed a letter on
the construction of a city on the lands of the Eushta people. On
March 25 (April 4), 1604, Boris Godunov sent the Cossack head Gavril
Pisemsky from Surgut and the head of the archery Vasily Tyrkov from
Tobolsk with the task of founding a city on the banks of the Tom
River, in the Tatar land, establishing the sovereign's arable land
around it and bringing the surrounding peoples into citizenship of
the Russian Tsar . By September 27 (October 7), 1604, all
construction work was completed. However, by 1648 the old prison
fell into disrepair, and a new prison was built on the southern cape
of the Resurrection Mountain, towering over the right bank of the
Tom, 60 kilometers from its confluence with the Ob and not far from
the mouth of the taiga river Ushaika. Tomsk became an important
strategic military center that ensured the safety of the local
population throughout the entire 17th century - in 1614, 1617, 1657
and 1698, it repulsed the raids of nomads.
After the creation
of the Siberian tract, which went from Moscow through Tomsk to
Kyakhta (Transbaikalia), Tomsk became an important center for
transit trade, in 1738 a pit service appeared in Tomsk. Gradually,
the city grew to the status of a regional administrative center and
in 1804 became the center of the huge Tomsk province, which included
the territories of the present Altai Republic, Altai Territory,
Kemerovo, Novosibirsk and Tomsk regions, East Kazakhstan region
(Kazakhstan), the western parts of Khakassia and Krasnoyarsk the
edges.
When laying the line of the Trans-Siberian Railway at
the end of the 19th century, the railway engineer N.P. Mezheninov,
who supervised the construction of the Central Siberian section of
the highway, decided that the main railway line should pass
significantly south of Tomsk, and Tomsk should be connected to it by
a separate branch, which was built in 1896. Since it was a dead end,
the city lost its importance as a transport hub.
Soviet power
in Tomsk was proclaimed on December 6 (19), 1917. On January 26
(February 8), 1918, the executive committee of the Tomsk Provincial
Council of Workers' and Soldiers' Deputies dissolved the Siberian
Regional Duma, and 2 months later dissolved the city duma and the
provincial zemstvo council. As a result of the uprising of the
Czechoslovak Corps on May 31, 1918, Tomsk came under the authority
of the White movement. In March 1919, an underground Bolshevik group
was preparing an armed uprising, but was discovered, its members
were shot. On the night of December 16-17, 1919, the Bolshevik
underground organized an armed uprising that ended in victory over
Kolchak's troops and the final establishment of Soviet power in
Tomsk. A few days later, on December 20, the Red Army entered the
city. Alexander Gratsianov was the last mayor.
In 1925, Tomsk
became part of the Siberian Territory, which was transformed into
the West Siberian Territory five years later, and in 1937 Tomsk
became a city of the Novosibirsk Region for 7 years. The period from
1918 to 1944 was the time of a serious decline of Tomsk, the fall of
its regional status, there was a powerful outflow of the population
to the rapidly growing Novosibirsk and other cities located on the
Trans-Siberian. There were no industrial enterprises, convenient
transport communications in the city, cultural life was gradually
curtailed. At the same time, scientific and teaching activities
continued to develop - at Tomsk State University and the
Technological Institute.
During the Great Patriotic War,
about 30 enterprises from the European part of the USSR were
evacuated to Tomsk, which became the basis of the city's industry:
during the war years, the volume of industrial production in Tomsk
tripled. The administrative status of the city also changed - on
August 13, 1944, the Tomsk region was formed, and Tomsk became the
regional center. 229 thousand Tomsk citizens fought on the fronts,
of which 63.6 thousand died, and 176 were awarded the title of Hero
of the Soviet Union.
In 1960-1980, the main strategic
positions and the scientific and educational complex developed in
Tomsk. Thanks to the oil industry of the Tomsk region created almost
from scratch. Attracting projects from the USSR Ministry of Oil
Industry to the Tomsk Region, among other things, became the basis
for the urgent development of regional transport infrastructure,
including the construction of a modern airport. The city becomes the
"capital" of the oil-producing region, the defense production of
modern (1960s) military electronics is being developed in the city,
part of the capabilities of the closed enterprise of the Soviet
nuclear project (Fifth Postal) is directed to solving problems, a
network of agro-industrial enterprises is being deployed around the
city for the food security of the inhabitants of Tomsk (a network of
poultry farms, a powerful pig farm (for 108 thousand heads per
year), a powerful base of construction industry enterprises is being
created (Tomsk house-building plant, ZhBK-100 plant, etc.), Tomsk
receives powerful cultural development. Artists from all over the
country are invited to Tomsk, poets, theatrical and
cinematographers, the Rodina widescreen cinema and the Palace of
Sports indoor ice stadium are being put into operation. their merit
is Yegor Ligachev, who served as the first secretary of the Tomsk
Regional Committee of the CPSU from 1964 to 1983.
In 1970,
the city was given the status of a historic city. During
Perestroika, restrictions on visiting the city by foreigners were
lifted.
In the 1990s, in Tomsk, as in most cities in Russia,
there was a decline in industrial production, especially in the
military-industrial complex. Instrument and radio engineering plants
ceased to exist; the petrochemical plant, which changed ownership
several times, experienced problems. In July 1996, Alexander
Makarov, the head of the administration of the Sovetsky district of
Tomsk, won over the incumbent mayor Gennady Konovalov in the first
nationwide election of the head of the city.
In 2004, Tomsk
turned 400 years old, the leadership of the city and the region
achieved, by preparing for the anniversary, the allocation of
significant funds from the federal budget for the development of the
city, in particular, for the repair of streets. The celebration of
the anniversary, scheduled for September 3-5, coincided with the
terrorist attack in Beslan and was limited to the first day, and the
rest of the holiday took place on October 7-10.
