Etymology

Initially, the name Gar, associated with slash-and-burn agriculture, later a more "beautiful" name, Green Dol, appeared. In 1932 the village was transformed into the city of Zelenodolsk.

Geography

Zelenodolsk is located on the left bank of the Volga, 38 km from Kazan. Zelenodolsk district, which includes the city, borders on the Chuvash Republic and the Republic of Mari El.

Zelenodolsk is the second most important subject of the Kazan agglomeration, the Capital Economic Region of Tatarstan and the Kazan-Zelenodolsk territorial-industrial hub, as well as the fifth most populous city in Tatarstan after Kazan, Naberezhnye Chelny, Nizhnekamsk and Almetyevsk.

The city has close agglomeration ties with Volzhsk (despite the fact that the latter is part of another subject of the Russian Federation, the Republic of Mari El), located 12 km west of Zelenodolsk.

Zelenodolsk is not a city with a compact territory - some of its parts are quite remote from the center and others, and the terrain between them sometimes has a difficult relief. The city does not yet have a wide and convenient exit to the Volga, although formally it stretches along it for 9 kilometers. Zelenodolsk is conditionally divided into three parts: the old part of the city, the Mirny microdistrict and the industrial zone, where industrial enterprises are mainly concentrated (the lower part of the city).

History

The city arose on the site of the Mari village of Porat, which is part of the Bolsheparatskaya hundred. In 1865, it was referred to as the village of Kabachishchi (after the name of the plot of arable land of the Paraty peasants "Kabachischenskie glades"). Since 1897, the village was called Paratsky Zaton (Paratsk), and since 1928 - the working village of Zeleny Dol. In 1932 it was transformed into the city of Zelenodolsk.

Since the end of the 19th century, the backwater has become a place for wintering and repairing river vessels, which marked the beginning of the Zelenodolsk shipyard (now the Zelenodolsk Gorky Shipyard).

As a result of the rise in the water level of the Kuibyshev reservoir and flooding of the coastal zone, during the construction of the Kuibyshev hydroelectric power station, the coastline has changed a lot.

On July 16, 1958 Zelenodolsk became the center of the Zelenodolsk region.

Now the largest public-private investment project is being implemented to create by 2025 within the agglomeration on the territory of 3.64 thousand hectares along the M7 highway between Zelenodolsk and Kazan a new satellite city "Green Dol" with an estimated population of 100 (hereinafter - 157) thousand people, housing stock 4.1 million m2, the cost of construction 140 billion rubles. with predominantly low-rise, turning into multi-storey buildings from the planned Zelenodolsk microdistrict "Volzhskaya Venice" on alluvial semi-boggy lands near Aisha and further through Orekhovka, where a zone of individual cottage construction is already being developed, in the direction to the Kazan village of Zalesny, which makes it possible in the future to join Zelenodolsk to Kazan.

Within the city there is a station of the Gorky railway Zelyony Dol, which is a key one for the transport support of the Republic of Mari El - an electrified line to Volzhsk and a non-electrified line to Yoshkar-Ola - Yaransk depart from it. Also, the railway communication Kazan - Moscow, Moscow - Kazan passes through the Zelyony Dol station.

Near the city there is a highway to Yoshkar-Ola and there are road (near the Kazan village of Zaimishche) and railway (Romanovsky) bridges across the Volga, near the city there is a ferry crossing, which before the construction of the bridge across the Volga (Zaimishche) was the main route M7.

City transport is represented by five bus routes covering almost all parts of the city, including remote ones. In Soviet times, large buses LiAZ-677 and medium-sized LAZ-695 were widespread in the city. In the post-Soviet period, the Municipal Motor Transport Enterprise of the city of Zelenodolsk PATP went bankrupt, and the bulk of transportation began to be carried out by private entrepreneurs on fixed-route taxis, represented by small PAZ buses and Gazelle minibuses. Since 2009, the city has been again served by large buses (NefAZ) of red color from the Kazan PATP-5, since 2010 - also green color from the revived ZPATP. Bus routes route No. 2 and No. 104 are represented by new large NefAZ buses running on gas fuel and with a reduced landing.

Suburban and intercity buses No. 104 Zelenodolsk-Kazan, No. 403 Zelenodolsk-Volzhsk and others depart from the bus station, which have intermediate stops along the way in the city.
