Sights

In December 2020, for the 250th anniversary of the village of Novaya Alenovka, on the site of which the city of Novovoronezh appeared, a forged sculpture of Alenka was installed. However, her controversial appearance raised a wave of discussions, first in the city itself, and then after publications in the media throughout the country. A few days after the opening, the monument was dismantled and sent for storage, and in 2022, a new sculpture cast in bronze was installed in its place. The new owner plans to install the former monument in one of the newly built residential areas of Voronezh.

The cooling pond of the Novovoronezh Nuclear Power Plant, which does not freeze in winter, also has an indirect effect on the city’s climate.

History

It was founded in 1957 as an urban-type settlement Novo-Gresovsky (later renamed Novovoronezhsky) in connection with the construction of the Novovoronezh nuclear power plant.

From 1959 to 1963 it was the center of the Novovoronezh region.

The status of the city was established by Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR No. 5611-XI of March 23, 1987.

In 2008, the urban district of Novovoronezh was formed.

From July 7, 2014 to July 13, 2014, the city hosted the X All-Russian Summer Rural Games. In 2020, a controversial monument to the legendary founder of the city, Alyonka, was erected in the city, who, according to legend, found a good place and brought her fellow villagers there. Thanks to this monument, Novovoronezh became famous throughout Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The forged sculptural composition, which cost the city a million rubles and caused negative reviews from citizens, was dismantled three days after installation and later sold at auction for 3.6 million rubles, with a starting price of 1 million rubles. The updated monument to Alyonka, but now made of bronze, was opened on July 1, 2022.

Status and territory

The city forms an administrative-territorial unit and municipal formation - the urban district of Novovoronezh with the only settlement in its composition.

The territory of the urban district consists of historically developed lands, adjacent public lands, territories of traditional environmental use of the population, recreational lands, lands for the development of the urban district and other lands, regardless of the form of ownership and intended purpose. The boundaries of the urban district - the city of Novovoronezh were established on the basis of the Law of the Voronezh Region dated December 2, 2004 No. 88-OZ. The total area of the urban district is 4613 hectares.

Symbolism

The coat of arms of the urban district of the city of Novovoronezh, Voronezh region, was approved on April 25, 2006 by the decision of the Novovoronezh City Duma.

The description of the coat of arms says: “In an azure (blue, light blue) field there is a silver turned eagle with outstretched wings, holding in its paws a golden bezant with three inscribed rays of the same metal, diverging like a fork-shaped cross; and a golden head, burdened with five scarlet stars with five rays; the two stars on the sides are half visible.”

The choice of the eagle figure is justified by the fact that back in 1712, a banner with a “bird sitting on a firing cannon” was drawn up for the Voronezh garrison infantry regiment, symbolizing “bravery, faith, victory, greatness and power.”
