Tverskaya is one of the main streets in the center of Moscow.
Tverskoy district is located around it. Tverskaya can be considered the
first Moscow street. It connected Moscow with the nearest large city
and, in the XIV—XV centuries, an irreconcilable enemy — Tver. In the
XVIII century, when Moscow confidently moved beyond the boundaries of
the Earthen City, Tverskaya, following Nevsky Prospekt in St.
Petersburg, began to acquire signs of elitism: the most exquisite houses
were built here and luxury shops were opened, some of which practically
went down in history - this is the Eliseevsky deli and Filippovskaya
bakery. In the 1930s. Tverskaya underwent a global reconstruction that
completely changed the appearance of the street. A few buildings
survived on it, many were destroyed or moved deeper into the courtyards,
and the rest were built over, which completely changed their appearance.
Ceremonial multi-storey buildings were erected along Tverskaya Street,
reflecting the aesthetic ideas of the new, Soviet era.
The area
adjacent to Tverskaya Street has long been called Tverskoy. It stretches
from Bolshaya Nikitskaya in the west to Neglinka in the east, including
a large and rather heterogeneous piece of old Moscow. Although the
Tverskoy municipal district extends beyond the Garden Ring, the guide
follows the natural Moscow toponymy. Tverskaya Street, and with it the
district, end at the intersection with the Garden Ring, on Triumfalnaya
Square; then 1st Tverskaya-Yamskaya Street and other districts of the
Moscow center begin, see Presnya and Marina Grove.
