Berlin-Mitte is a district of the Mitte district. Other districts of
the Mitte district are: Tiergarten and Hansaviertel, Moabit, Wedding and
Gesundbrunnen.
In Berlin's usage, “Mitte” is still referred to
today's Berlin-Mitte district, which comprises most of the city's
historical center. The district was enlarged around the districts of
Tiergarten, Hansaviertel, Moabit, Wedding and Gesundbrunnen in 2001.
Important sights can also be found in Tiergarten.
In the Mitte
district is the Brandenburg Gate with Pariser Platz and Berlin's
boulevard Unter den Linden, the Museum Island, the Gendarmenmarkt, the
"Alex" and the Potsdamer Platz traffic junction. The area Potsdamer
Platz with the Sony Center, on the other hand, is already in the
Tiergarten district, also the Reichstag. The government district runs
across both districts.
History · On today's Spreinsel, on which
the former city palace and the former palace of the Republic were stood,
in the northern part the museum island with its world -famous museums
was founded in 1237 Cölln and on the right of Spree 1244 Berlin. From
here the double town of Berlin-Cölln increased. It was not until 1710
that Berlin, Cölln, Friedrichswerder, Dorotheenstadt and Friedrichstadt
were merged into the royal main and residence city of Berlin. The new
Zoll and Akzisemauer was built between 1734 and 1737 and surrounded
Pariser Platz with the Brandenburg Gate, the Leipziger Platz with the
Potsdam goal, the Hallesche, Kottbuser and Silesian goal (Kreuzberg
district), the Frankfurter Tor (Friedrichshain) and north The Torstraße
with Rosenthaler Platz and Robert-Koch-Platz. Behind the Brandenburg
Gate was the elector's hunting ground, from which the zoo later emerged.
But even in front of these goals, the surrounding villages emerged
rapidly at the end of the 19th century, rapidly growing wealthy cities
such as Charlottenburg, Wilmersdorf and Schöneberg.
GDR time ·
The old district in the eastern part of the city was separated from West
Berlin until 1990. The government district of the GDR was also located
here. 3/4 of the district were surrounded by the GDR from 1961. The
S-Bahnen on the light rail ended at Friedrichstrasse train station, from
east of the S-Bahn station, from West Berlin on the long-distance
station. Long -distance trains had longer stays on the train due to the
border control. West Berliners were able to change from the upper train
station to the underground S-Bahn station of the North-South S-Bahn and
to the subway line 6. Both lanes drove through on all other platforms in
the darkened train stations slowly without stopping under the border
guards under the district. The subway line 8 also drove through without
stopping under Alexanderplatz. A change was only possible between the
subway line 5 (Friedrichsfelde - Hönow) and the interrupted line 2
(Mohrenstraße - Pankow). Alexanderplatz was not approached by trams.
The Brandenburg Gate with Pariser Platz and Potsdamer Platz were not
accessible from both sides. Here the insurmountable border strip went
with the wall.
Today · Alexanderplatz is still the busiest place
and offers many shops, but city life has shifted north of the Hackeschen
Markt, Oranienburger Straße and Prenzlauer Berg. The noble shopping
street has become Friedrichstrasse and the boulevard is still under the
Linden.
Alt Berlin was between the Spree and the Stadtbahnviaduct. It
consisted of the districts:
Nikolaiviertel (from 1230) first
settlement with the Nikolaikirche, which only had one tower until 1878.
Monastery district (from 1260) with the whey market and the ruin of the
monastery church.
Marienviertel (from 1270) with the still preserved
Marienkirche at the television tower.
Heilig-spirit district (from
1270) with the Holy Spirit Hospital and the still preserved Holy Spirit
Chapel.
Very few buildings are preserved from the historical,
densely built -up city of Berlin. The buildings were heavily destroyed,
but rebuilt. The GDR government wanted to create a new Berlin with a
free axis from the Palace of the Republic to Alexanderplatz and the 368
m high television tower. For this purpose, 2/3 of the historical center
were planned. What remains is the Marienkirche, the Holy Spirit Chapel
and the ruins of the monastery church. The Red Rathaus from 1869 was
rebuilt until 1956 after serious damage. For the 700th anniversary of
Berlin in 1987, the Nikolaiviertel was partially rebuilt in an adapted
industrial plate construction with historicizing facades in compliance
with the floor plans. The few existing buildings have been restored. In
this context, the Nikolaikirche was rebuilt between 1980-1987. Parts of
the old Berlin are only preserved in the monastery district. The
Marienviertel and the Holy Spirit Quarter has completely disappeared.
This resulted in some green spaces with the television tower and north
of Karl-Liebknecht-Straße Hochhäuser and Hotelanlagen, the latter being
rebuilt after 1990.
Cölln: There is nothing left of the medieval
buildings of the Berlin sister city.
The Hohenzollern city lock was
in the middle of the spree island until 1950. The swampy north of the
spree island was not built on in the Middle Ages. The museums and the
Berlin cathedral were only built in the 19th and 20th centuries. South
of the castle is the historic district of Fischerinel. It was only
between 1967 and 1972 that the last received houses were demolished and
replaced by six high -rise buildings.
Friedrichswerder: The first
expansion of the city was created in 1662 in the west of the double town
of Berlin-Cölln. Here are the Friedrichswerdersche Church of 1830, the
Zeughaus, the crown prince palace rebuilt in 1968 and the commander
house rebuilt in 2003.
Neu-Cölln: First city expansion in 1662 in
the south of the double town of Berlin-Cölln. The Spittelmarkt and the
Märkische Museum have been located on the edge of Neu-Cölln and since
the beginning of the 20th century. To the west and south of the city
expansion, a fortress ditch that is no longer available today was built.
City extensions in the late Middle Ages
Dorotheenstadt and Unter
den Linden: From 1674 the city grew to the west to today's Brandenburg
Gate. A wide avenue with 1000 nut and 1000 linden trees became a wide
avenue from the riding path from the castle to the Jagdrevier
Tiergarten. Little by little, splendid buildings were created on the
south side the commander's house, the Crown Prince Palace, the Princess
Palace, the State Opera, the Old Library and the Old Palace.
Friedrichstadt - 1691 was founded by the suburb of the suburb until
1710. It is located south of the Dorotheenstadt and first reached to
Zimmerstraße, later to Mehringplatz in today's Kreuzberg district. The
city was laid out in strict planning with rectangular roads. Many French
refugees (Huguenots) settled here. A German and a French church was
built on the Gendarmenmarkt, on which a large coupling tower was grown
in 1785.
For national arrival see Berlin.

a central place of the Evangelical Church in Germany and is located on
the northern part of the Spreinsel, which is called Museum Island. The
78 m high dome was built at the beginning of the 20th century based on
the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Open: Mon. - Sat.: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.,
Sun. 12 noon, April - September: until 8 p.m. Price: entry: € 7

2 Sankt-Hedwigs-Cathedral. The cathedral has
been the Catholic Bischofskirche since the diocese of Berlin was founded
in 1930 and, with the title of a Basilica Minor (since 1927), is one of
the most important Catholic sacral buildings in the city. As a round
central building, the church on the Pantheon in Rome was based. From
1747 to 1773, the construction period extended to the plans of Georg
Wenzeslaus von Knobelsdorff. The construction, which was initially only
temporarily completed, was only brought to the end in the 19th century
by Max Hasak based on the original ideas. The church burned out in 1943
and was rebuilt between 1952 and 1963, without the "lantern" on the big
dome. Inside it was completely redesigned and received access to the
Unterkirche with the newly created eight chapels in the middle of the
room. This access will be concluded with the renovation of the interior
in June 2014. The new altar is to be built in the middle and the 550
believers will sit in a circle.

1945 to the surrounding walls, rebuilt in 1980-1987. Today: permanent
exhibition of the city museum: "From the city ground to the dual
leadership - 800 years of Berlin Nikolaikirche".
5 Marienkirche. Around 1270
in the Marienviertel of Altberlin on the former Neuer Markt. After a
city fire in 1380 it was rebuilt. Today's appearance dates from 1893/94,
when the church was converted into Gothic in the course of the return.
Today it is the only historic building in the area with the Red City
Hall.
6 Holy Spirit Chapel. Around 1250 in Spandauer Straße.

Parochial Church, Klosterstraße 66,
Berlin. In 1703 Berlin's first important baroque church was inaugurated
for the reformed community in the historic monastery district. Until
1944, the striking obelical -class -like tower tip shaped the cityscape.
She burned out and collapsed with her 37 bells and the roof. In 1961
last service took place in the emergency church. Then it initially
served for exhibitions and concerts, from 1970 as a furniture store.
After the turn, the church was restored until 2004. The planned
reconstruction of the tower is initially put on ice. Today, in addition
to rare services, the church interior is used as an exhibition room for
art projects and for other events.
Ruin

between 1988 and 1995. Germany's largest and most splendid synagogue
represents a masterpiece of the engineering art at the time. The 50 m
high dome has small side storms ("miniminarette"). These and the facade
of the building give the building a Moorish appearance. An exhibition is
housed in the building. The dome can be climbed from April - September.

St. Michael's Church, Michaelkirchplatz 15
(Luisenstadt; Heinrich-Heine-Straße U-Bahn U8 or Heinrich-Heine-Platz
bus 147). Catholic Church, built in 1851–56 in the historic arch of the
arch, based on a design by the Schinkel student August Soller. The angel
basin is located opposite the Michaelkirchplatz.
Berlin Palace, Schloßplatz, 10178 Berlin.
Started as a medieval
castle complex in the middle of the Spreinsel, where Cölln was created
in the neighborhood of the sister city of Berlin, in 1442 the self -made
Elector Friedrich II, called Eisenzahn, decided to build a castle
against the bitter resistance of the Berlin and Cöllner. In 1448 there
was an uprising that went down in history as a “Berlin unwilling”. They
tore the walls of the castle and put the excavation pit under water.
However, the citizens were inferior to the electors called. In 1451 the
first part of the castle was completed. From 1538 converted to the
Renaissance castle of the electors.
Another renovation 1698–1716 to
the baroque lock. In 1699 Andreas Schlüter started building renewal, but
fell out of favor because in 1706 the increased unfinished coin tower
threatened to collapse. In 1716 the baroque castle in 1716 was now twice
as large. However, the dome was only built with the castle chapel on the
west side from 1845 to 1853. The east side on the banks of the Spree
remained characterized by older parts of the building. In the final
expansion, the castle had two large and two small farms and 1210 rooms.
The castle was badly damaged in World War II, but by no means as strong
as Charlottenburg Castle in the west of the city. Between 1945 and 1948
there were even exhibitions in the less damaged parts.
Because the
new GDR government in the castle saw a symbol of the hated Prussian
absolutism, she had the castle blow and remove between September and
December 1950. The resulting place to the large Aufmarschplatz with
grandstands for the government's government on May 1, 1951 could be
produced. In the eastern part of Marx-Engels-Platz, the Palace of the
Republic was built between 1973 and 1976, which was called "Palazzo
Proczo", "Ballast of the Republic" and "Erich's lamp shop". The latter
alluded to the countless lights of the foyer ceiling lighting and the
state and party leader Erich Honecker. On September 19, 1990, the palace
was closed at the instructions of the People's Chamber for asbestos
contamination. The GDR Palace was demolished between February 2006 to
December 2008, so that the square was orphaned for years and the subway
construction site.
In July 2002, the Bundestag approved the immediate
reconstruction of the castle with its outer forms to allow the Humboldt
Forum to arise. On November 28, 2008, the jury decided on the design of
the Italian architect Francesco Stella, which was largely based on the
historical model. The Italian succeeded in "creating the historical
again and on the other hand to find a modern answer". Three facades are
reconstructed. The river side, on the other hand, is designed modern.
Critics Spötteln, the "Loch facade will receive the character of a
parking garage". Even after the foundation stone was laid, there are
repeated demands on this page to give a different face or to leave this
page open based on the Louvre model. The reconstruction was postponed by
a lack of money. In June 2012, the construction work for the Humboldt
Forum began removing the old wooden piles. The official laying of the
foundation stone took place on June 12, 2013. At the end of 2014 the top
floor was completed in the shell, but the official celebration of the
topping -out ceremony was not celebrated until June 12, 2015. Work on
the historical facade started in spring 2015. The plaster models are
already ready for the 3000 stone elements of the three -sided facade and
the Schlüterhof. Now these are set in sandstone. The first facade parts
have been attached to concrete construction since spring 2015.
The
new castle becomes a Humboldt forum for the forum for culture, art and
science. It should develop education, knowledge and culture as the
spiritual heritage of Alexander and Wilhelm of Humboldt. Cultural and
artistic activities want to be paired with aspects of research and
science. Museums, library and university should return to their place of
origin. In addition to the research and museum library for non-European
art and cultures, there will be a Humboldt laboratory with 1000 m² of
exhibition space. The Central and State Library of Berlin wants to set
up a “world of languages” on 4,000 square meters. In the upper two
floors, in addition to the Museum of Asian Art, the Ethnological Museum
with the departments of Asia, Africa, America and the South
Pacific/Oceania are to move in. So far, these museums are in
Berlin-Dahlem.
Crown prince palace. Built in 1663, in 1732 it was
converted into a baroque palace with a ascent ramp and middle risalite
for the crown prince, the later King Friedrich II. Today, exhibitions
and cultural events take place in the Crown Prince Palace.
Princess
palace. Today: Opera Palace.

Brandenburg Gate (Brandenburg
Gate S-Bahn S1S-Bahn S2S-Bahn S25U-Bahn U5). In the years from 1788 to
1791, by Carl Gotthard Langhans, the Dorotheenstadt on Pariser Platz was
built from 1788 to 1791 on the instructions of the Prussian King
Friedrich Wilhelm II. It is the symbol of the city and at the same time
a national symbol. It has symbolic meaning as a triumphal gate of the
former imperial capital, after the World War as a symbol of the division
of Berlin and the nation. The gate is a 26 meter high, 65.5 meters wide
and 11 meters deep early classicist natural stone construction from
Elbeandstein. It is crowned by the quadriga with the goddess of victory
Gottfried Schadows.

At that time one of the city's largest areas. The stairwell is
particularly impressive.
Equestrian statue Frederick the Great. King Frederick II of Prussia,
by the Berliners he was called the old Fritz, stands on the median of
the boulevard Unter den Linden. In 1950 the still image spared by World
War II was removed and stored in Potsdam. In 1960 the symbol of a
"reactionary policy" was to be melted down, but in 1987 it was rebuilt
in almost the same place.
Schiller monument. On the Gendarmenmarkt
Neue Wache, Unter den Linden 4 (State Opera Bus 100, 300). The new guard
was built between 1816 and 1818 according to the plans of Karl Friedrich
Schinkel. It initially served as a guard house for the king's guard and
as a memorial for the fallen of the Napoleonic Wars. In 1931 the
building was converted into a memorial for the fallen of the First World
War. From now on, a two-meter-high base made of black granite with an
oak wreath made of silver with gold and platinum pads was a
two-meter-high base. The guard was almost completely destroyed in World
War II and restored until 1960. From 1969 there was an eternal flame in
a glass prism instead of the granite base. The flame was reflected in
this glass block, so that it looked like many small flames were burning.
Since 1993, the new guard has served as a memorial for the victims of
war and tyranny. Today there is a copy of the sculpture "Mother with
Totem son" by Käthe Kollwitz. Price: free admission.
Holocaust
Memorial. The monument to the murdered Jews of Europe, which is mostly
shortened in the Holocaust memorial, is a monument to the Jews murdered
under the rule of the National Socialists. Between 2003 and spring 2005,
the building was built as a design by Peter Eisenman on an area of
around 19,000 m² near the Brandenburg Gate. On Ebertstrasse on the edge
of the Tiergarten and on the back of the American embassy on
Behrenstrasse, the 2711 of different high concrete stelts are available,
which are freely accessible by all four surrounding streets. The
location of the information located under the square includes a space of
the dimensions, a space of the names, a space of families and a space of
the places. The stones are popular resting place on the city tour.

the middle of the then Kaiser-Franz-Josef-Platz.
